Arcade Fire

Arcade Fire is an indie rock band based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and fronted by the husband and wife duo of Win Butler and Régine Chassagne. In addition to instrument mainstays guitar, drums and bass guitar, members play piano, violin, viola, cello, double bass, xylophone, glockenspiel, keyboard, French horn, accordion, harp and mandolin. The band takes most of their instruments on tour, and the multi-instrumentalist band members switch instrumental duties throughout their shows.

The Recession, 9/11, The Internet, Terrorism, George Bush, July 7th 2005, Big Brother, Reality Television, Social Networking, Celebrity, Tony Blair, Online Shopping, The First Black President, The Smoking Ban, I-Pods, Borat, Banksy, Chavs… In no chronological or logical order, these are just some of the things that the decade dubbed “the noughties” may be remembered...
I feel worried about 2k10. It seems like 2k9 is a year that we should feel ‘ashamed of’, and 2k10 is a year that we will sort of just emotionally ‘pull back’ our interest in tastemaking. I feel like 2k9 has had some ‘good products’, but maybe it was just a year where we are learning ‘how 2 use the internet’ when it comes to consuming music. It...
As the year winds down (or up, depending on half-full or half-empty glasses and whatnot), so does this blog. The Top Albums of 2008 countdown is over, and with this final installment, my weekly mix year-end round-up is now finished. This collection of mixes features themes on solo artists, travel, Scandinavia, autumn, 4AD, more synthpop, literature, more dance, more cover versions, Halloween,...
The latest album in our best of the decade series is undoubtedly a masterpiece and the way it carved itself an alarmingly unique and powerful corner within music will surely make it one of the most talked about albums for years to come. After its release in 2004, the musical world has taken on a much more epic and grandiose look ever since.  The album is Funeral and the band...

Photons Genre: Indie / Alternative / Rock From: San Francisco, California, United States When did size become so important for North American and Canadian bands? I’ve been trying to convince Mrs Devil that size ain’t important and now it seems that you can’t be in a band if it’s got less members than there...
Magic Me Genre: Rock From: Oakland, California United States I know very little about Oakland’s Magic Me. Their Myspace site is not particularly informative and doesn’t include any pictures of the band and google is not much help either.     My diligent research has managed to confirm that Magic Me are a quintet featuring members of The Jim Yoshii Pile-up, and...
Photo Illustration by Nick Duncan. Click for hi-res version. 2008 is taking it’s final bow and a what a year it has been. While ‘07 was dominated by a slew of  indie rock heavy hitters releasing awesome albums (Spoon, Of Montreal, Arcade Fire, Wilco,  Radiohead) this is a year where new talent seems to be garnering the most attention.  For me at least,...
Myspace // "23 Fears" [Audio] // "23 Fears" [Buy] This is a Leeds group that has flown under our radar until very recently, but it seems as though all of the right people in England have been paying attention to them. Their recent single "23 Fears" has received nods of approval from Steve Lamacq, Zane Lowe, Radio 1, and Q Radio while the band is busy prepping...
[Photo Credit: Britt Merete Aase] Myspace // "Walk the Shame" [Audio] One of the problems with writing about bands from other countries is the lack of biographical information in English. Listening to bands sing in another language may be a different story — good music is good music, but if I can’t educate my readers about a band, then I have a little problem. There are...

Arcade Fire Reviews

Allow me to forge a fair warning: The Antlers’ Hospice is not an easy record to sit through. With the right focus, in the right mindset, this album is as powerful on the soul as climbing a mountain is on the body. This album will crush you if you don’t know what to expect. Hospice is at once the simplest and most immense album of the year. Its music is made of small melodies,...
Band name: This weeks singles Teaser: Ric reviews this week’s singles, including new releases from Jakobinarina, Arcade Fire, Tiny Masters of Today, Turbo Fruits and more. One of them is, apparently, ‘as commercial as a shrivelled penis’. Can you guess which one? Pull quote 2: Top marks for not taking themselves too seriously… First para:...
Band name: Tapes n Tapes Label: Rough Trade Teaser: This is one of those albums that is officially released on 24th July, but you can already easily get as was self released and I think put out on another label in the US. Anyway, it’s excellent. Pull quote 2: Like most of the tracks, you think you know what you’re listening to until you’re surprised with...
Fanfarlo are a band that have been kicking about on the fringe of the hype machine for a while and now, after a recording session stateside in Connecticut, their debut album Reservoir is finally unleashed. The album starts with “I’m A Pilot” which is the perfect statement of intent. The song begins with loud, confident foot stomps and progresses into a piano-led anthem-...
Venue: Henham Park, Southwold (Suffolk, UK) Teaser: Abi reports from Latitude, the festival that “shuns the blood, sweat and rock ‘n roll ethos of the Carling Weekends, and instead presents a smaller, cheaper, and more accessible version of Glastonbury.” Pull quote 2: Cue the Arcade Fire and a subsequent onslaught of fireworks and flying lanterns....
