I’m at ULU and I am watching We Have Band, a trio who major on electronic percussion, slap bass and the kind of hair that Wesley Snipes had. They are dressed in white, they bang drums and rattle tambourines and their music seem less like songs than extended jams with sporadic, often inaudible vocals. What works on record doesn’t really come across very well live this evening, partly I think, because of an unhelpful sound mix, but also because their output seems fundamentally muddled.
Some bands entirely define their time, however brief their reign or their time may be. De La Soul was one such band, and Three Feet High And Rising is so 1989 the CD may as well be sold in a day-glo hi-top trainer. The logical culmination of a decade of hip-hop, sampling and E-fuelled peace ‘n’ love, the album, the band and the times are neatly encapsulated in one album.
Fun Fun Fun Fest has announced a few more additions to its already stellar 2009 lineup, including both Alan Palomo-helmed projects (Neon Indian + VEGA), Fucked Up, Harlem, Yeasayer, Kid Sister, and more. These groups join Death, GZA, Health, Atlas Sound, King Khan & BBQ Show, and many more on the ‘09 bill. More additions coming next week…
As you may have noticed, along with the lack of posts going on around here, the Graboid has seemingly disappeared as well the past couple of weeks. To catch everyone back up to speed, I’ve decided to post the album releases from the past few weeks that we’ve missed along with everything from this week. I’m sure I may have missed some releases, but I think I’ve covered most of the important stuff for the most part. As usual, let us know what album(s) you’ve been excited about and if we managed to forget anything!
When we first debuted music from Miike Snow, those involved in the project still remained unknown. But after some time and scoop giving, we know that the trio consists of Swedish heavy-hitters Bloodshy & Avant (aka Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg, the two producers and songwriters behind Britney Spears’ "Toxic") and Fires Of Rome leadman Andrew Wyatt. We still have no idea what the creepy moose/rabbit/nuclear warhead lovechild thing is above, though.
After roping in some serious remixers for their own benefit, the Snow dudes have done the same for this band called Vampire Weekend, revamping (ha!) recent single "The Kids Don’t Stand A Chance" with the bubbly epic house pads and expansive textures they’ve perfected in their own tunes. This is the only place to pick this one up so don’t sleep!

Typically, rap videos aren’t anything I write home about, though I do harbor a secret envy of sweet dance moves. The video for "Pro Nails" featuring Kanye West is actually what got me into the track, thanks to the close-up fingertip break dancing (complete with miniature shoes!). I daresay the sequence is cute…icle. Definitely too entertaining to watch in secret.
