Bam Bam Interview

1. For people who are unaware of Bam Bam please can you give us five facts about the band which will tell the world all they need to know about you?

  • We have a very weird sense of humor
  • We hate the name Bam Bam but now we get used to it
  • Three boys and one girl. And that girl is braver than the three men together.
  • We do all of our recordings in our rehearsal space inside an old rat poison warehouse
  • Ocasionally we use drugs. Only ocasionally

2. Lazy music journalists, i.e. me, have compared you to The Breeders and Broken Social Scene, were you influenced by either of these bands?
Meme
:The Breeders maybe a little bit because of all the 90? influence we have. We born in the 82-89 so we?e like 90? kids, BSS i dont see like an influence maybe is more like a coincidence of influences.
Mou: Yes, maybe a little bit of Breeders, but not really. Personally I find BSS dull and boring. We are more into the good stuff of life, 13th Floor Elevators, Beach Boys, CAN… Things our parents could have been listening to in their youth but they didn’t.

3. Your debut album is currently available for free from the Nene Records website, did you always plan to distribute it like that?
Mou: Yes. On-line and free 4ever. The only exception would be if someone would release some songs on vinyl, or if some give us a lot of money to prostitute our music in Wallmart.

4. You played at SXSW last year, did you enjoy the experience and did you get to see many other bands play?
Meme:It was a great moment, we played in a Latin Showcase so most of the audience were latin, we feel like home. This year is an international showcase its gonna be more weird, i think. We played and saw a lot of bands like Holy Fuck, No Age, The New Bloods, The Breeders, NOFX, These Are Powers, Old Time Relijun, Dark Meat for FREE!
Mou: SXSW 08 was crazy. But since it was our first time we reeally didn? knew all the amazing stuff going on outside the festival, all the free parties etc. I was amazed to see These are Powers and so dissapointed i missed Roky Erickson

5. And are there any bands who you’re keen to see this year?
Meme: DEVO DEVO DEVO DEVO, The New York Dolls. The Homosexuals, King Kahn, Black Lips, Max Tundra
Mou: The Silver Apples, Ratas del Vaticano, DEVO, Dinosaur Jr, The Drones!!!

6. Using the power of Google Translator I found that ‘Sin las patas traseras’ means ‘Without The Back Legs’. Is this a common phrase in Mexico or just a random song title?
Meme: Our life is a compilation of random thoughts
Mou: I don’t know how came with that phrase. But it’s not common, lots of people ask me about that. It’s just a mental image of a dog with just the front legs and rockets instead of back legs.

7. What plans have you got for the rest of the year? Will you be playing any of the European festivals?
Meme
: The main plan is to record our second album and touring in the summer, maybe. Europe if someone invite us we go. You know theres an economic crisis in Mexico and we are kinda unemployed or like Mou said: "We?e not unemployed, we?e job-free"
Mou: Rent a house, trash it, live there for a year, make an album there and then convert ourselves in Branch Davidian Seventh Day Adventists
