++ALBUM++ review by Ric Rawlins
Welsh language pop obsessive Ric Rawlins finds much to get excited about in this downloadable - and free - LP of the scene's latest indie and hip hop acts. But will you get excited too? Here's a clue: yes - it's excellent.
Thanks in part to the Welsh Rare Beat series and the continued dedication to excellence from Ankst Records, the Welsh language indie scene of 2008 operates like a conspiracy of inventiveness, and it has more than enough rocket fuel up it's ass to keep going.
And here's the proof; 10 tracks that brim with catchy hooks, untraceable atmospheres and a refreshing absence of celebrity ambition or "cool consciousness".
"Representing the 'cannabis-pop' brigade (there's always one) is Mr Huw... "
Unlike Jaws 3, Terminator 3 or Father of the Bride 3, this is one of those rare occasions where a third sequal manages not to be utter dogshit. Featuring tracks chosen in part by Cardiff's Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens, the depth and diversity on offer here is fantastic.
Things kick off with Derwyddon Dr Gonzo, whose track brings to mind Stevie Wonder holding a kung fu battle on the beaches of Miami Vice. Next comes the spooky forest vibes of Cate Le Bon, who some may know from Neon Neon. Her track 'Byw Heb Farw' is like a brilliantly bad acid trip.
Fflur Dafyyd a'r Barf sound like the opening credits to a BBC Holiday show - which perhaps isn't such a recommendation. Thankfully, it's followed by Mattoidz, whose punk rock mischief echoes the Undertones.
Representing the 'cannabis-pop' brigade (there's always one such band in Welsh language compilations) is Mr Huw, after which things draw nicely to a close with hip hop gurus Y Diwygiad, who rap over space synths and nicely retro drum breaks. GLC? Never heard of them.
Cheapskate bastards will love this LP because it's free. But it's also there for people with exploration in their DNA - and that means you. Yes you! Now Go! DOWNLOAD!!
