Operahouse + Fables + Glam Chops + Lonelady

8th Jul - Buffalo Bar, Highbury Corner

> OPERAHOUSE (London)
> FABLES (London)
> GLAM CHOPS (London)
> LONELADY (Manchester)

> OPERAHOUSE (London)
How are we to fill the gap between Maccabees classic debut album and a follow up ? Sample some Operahouse, a new four-piece from London, and you need worry no more. Precise and full-on playing, moving from punked up post-hardcore twin guitars to bright and brittle jangling like Good Shoes at their best. Without doubt a culmination of the UK artrock scene created by Futureheads and Maximo Park where tunes and melody meet intelligent lyrics and all delivered with attitude and ability. Check out either of the first singles, 'Diane' or 'Born a boy' (Marrakesh Records) and you'll wonder why they're not in the charts already. Lead vocalist Johnny Lloyd certainly has that tunesmith's knack of delivering a melody that is instantly memorable and familiar. The band can hit a groove every bit as potent as Hot Club or Forward Russia on full throttle. Catch them now.

> FABLES (London)
How the hugely enjoyable and popular electro art-poppers Bolt Action 5 didn't become massive will remain a mystery but at least we have a new collective to get behind called Fables. Also including members of 586 including some vocals from Marnie Hollande there is still that blend of fuzzed up power chords and 80's synth sounds and in fact the classic synth pop of the eighties (yes, Heaven 17 and Human League) is never far away but Fables remain fast and furious with sub-metal and punk riffing. With Cutting Pink With Knives now sadly split up and To My Boy momentarily quiet, we need the hardcore art-pop of Fables more than ever.

> GLAM CHOPS (London)
Exactly what side projects should deliver - a side step from main bands and a good time guaranteed. This (sometimes) eight-piece has been masterminded by Paul Kearney from Guided Missile club and Label and Tim from Bath's legendary Purr Club. Choosing the two most charismatic frontmen to present the whole combo, Eddie Argos (Art Brut) and DavId Devant (Spirit Wife) was not just a smart move but inspired. Their reputation has already spread London. Glam is the word from early Roxy (including sax breaks) and Bowie to cheesy and beat-y Sweet, Glitter band, and even shades of the good times The Rezillos gave or the twin-guitars of Thin Lizzy. Expect spandex and make-up, tongue in cheek parody lyrics, a good time and even some tunes to go home humming.

> LONELADY (Manchester)
Lonelady (Julie in fact) is a DIY masterclass, having played Austin's SxSW festival under her own organising and currently with three independent singles released including a Too Pure Records singles club release 'Early the haste comes / Joy' 7" white vinyl. Solo performances, half acoustic, half electric, have been augmented with drums and occasional organs (think John and Jehn). Initially, and lazily, compared to London's Theoretical Girl and Ipso Facto, Lonelady's vocal and guitar stylings are closer to an American alt-rock of Throwing Muses, Sleater Kinney or Bikini Kill, with a confident and powerful Kathleen Hanna (or Scout Niblet) vocal and strident guitar riffing to demonstrate the New wave influence of Fire Engines or Delta 5.
