BBQ and King Khan have released another garage rock gem. Invisible Girl is a rock n roll soul party record - all handclaps, doo wop backing vocals, 12 bar chords and familiar melodies. And quite unbelievably filthy lyrics. Since its inception, rock n roll has celebrated sexual adventure and fantasy. But while pioneers such as Chuck Berry and John Lee Hooker were forced to cloak their lyrics in innuendo and double entendre, BBQ and King Khan delight in being able to spell out their intentions explicity. ‘Tastebuds’ tells of the dirty duo’s desire to have extra sensory organs on their cocks so they can get even more out of their sexual hijinks. Really. Not a song I’d play to my Mum.
The album doesn’t rely on smutty gimmicks though, they’re just part of the mix. What makes it such a fantastic listen is King Khan and BBQs’ genius for crafting perfect garage rock songs. Impossibly catchy hooks will have you singing along until the next Black Lips record and the feel and production are spot on.
They’re touring with Those Darlins at the moment. Catch them (if they’re not in jail) at the following shows:

One other thing to mention - surely everyone has noticed the uncanny resemlence between Mark Sultan as portrayed on the LP cover, and the Mighty Boosh’s Tony Harrison? Which is the perfect excuse to include these clips:
