It’s not for the cock, it’s for a review of the decade

The Recession, 9/11, The Internet, Terrorism, George Bush, July 7th 2005, Big Brother, Reality Television, Social Networking, Celebrity, Tony Blair, Online Shopping, The First Black President, The Smoking Ban, I-Pods, Borat, Banksy, Chavs…

In no chronological or logical order, these are just some of the things that the decade dubbed “the noughties” may be remembered for.

But never mind all that nonsense. How about the slightly more pressing issue of what has defined this strange old ten years, musically speaking? From the smart attire and even smarter guitar chords of The Strokes (and the numerous, ongoing string of artists they influenced) through to the multi-instrumental, orchestral rock of Arcade Fire via the constantly evolving face of guitar and dance music fused together, this decade has seen a multitude of great bands and emergence of thrilling genres.

On the electronic side of affairs, we’ve seen the growth of Grime from a pirate radio loving UK rap community to a genuine, bona fide chart topping genre of the people. The  development of Dubstep has produced a web of exhilaratingly experimental offshoots in all directions and the whole concept of dance music has turned on its head enough times to become, and remain, cool to indie kids.

So, like every man and his dog, It’s Not For The Cock are producing a series of posts on the best albums of the decade. But not just content to spew our own thoughts out like a belly full of shit cider and a dodgy curry, we’ve asked a number of guest writers to give us their thoughts. Each guest writer- made up of bands, artists, DJs, music writers, promoters, music fans, “label people” etc etc- has been kind enough to choose one of their favourite albums released this decade and write a small piece about it.

There’s endless possibilities of what might come up- Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Burial, Jamie T, Bat For Lashes, Animal Collective, Deftones, The Libertines, Dizzee Rascal, The Strokes, TV On The Radio, Battles, Four Tet…the list goes forever on.

We will be posting new albums of the decade pieces throughout December, so keep checking back y’all. We’ve got some good’uns. Here’s the first:
