Pulled Apart By Horses - Captain's Rest, Glasgow - 15/12/09

I can’t get enough of this band. Seriously. Part of me feels that I should probably shut up about Pulled Apart By Horses before everyone else gets sick of the sound of them. Infact, maybe that wouldn’t be an altogether bad thing; protecting them from the droves of idiots who will no doubt jump on the populist bandwagon.

Tonight was a bit out of the blue as far as gig announcements go. It seems like such a short time ago the Leeds quad were in the other end of the city playing with Biffy Clyro; having them return to a much smaller, and a headline slot was an unexpected and joyous bonus to the crammed festive period.

Whilst the venue was fairly sparsely attended for the supports, by the time PABH sauntered onstage (late), there was a good number stood around eagerly waiting as a dodgy amp and pedal setup was fiddled about with to produce some sound.

With time already getting on, it would be fair enough if the concerned expressions would translate into a lack-luster performance on the band’s part, but after a messy start to the first song, the familiar ferocious stampede of their live performance kicked in, and boy was it loud.

I’m not sure exactly why, but it seems that recently, the number of bruises and injuries that I come away from a gig with, the better the band have been. Not that there’s been any moshing or headbanging on my part - more band members crashing their bodies off the stage and into the crowd at random intervals. In other gigs there have been wine bottles dangled precariously off of ledges; speaker stacks waving dangerously and full-on body tackles to contend with, and tonight was no different. Every time you turned round, there was another band member clambering ontop of another of the building’s fixtures in a haphazard way

How these guys manage to pull off all of this, as well as being incredibly at ease with each other and in interacting with the audience in-between is nothing short of a miracle. I’m bored of bands that try and impress with witty anecdotes; rambling nonsense is far more appealing.
