Matt Bigland from the mighty Dinosaur Pile Up takes his turn to give us his take on the top 10 (err, well.. 9) acts of 2009.
1. Well I discovered Torche this year, and they’re the only band in a long while that have totally blown my brain wide open. Like the melvins but more driving. Kicking drums, really heavy, neanderthal vocal harmonies. Amazing.
2. Monotonix. Freaking sick band from Tel Aviv. I’ve seen them like three times in leeds now, and they are truly the most wigged live show ever. Totally amazing. Drum/Voacal/Guitar, like black sabbath fucking Jimmy Hendrix. Totally awesome.
3. Big Business. Was lucky enough to catch them with the Melvins (obviously, because they now make up half of the Melvins), but they’re really great. Really powerful, awesome. Like if lemmy listened to queen and ate the Melvins. Wicked.
4. Japanese Voyeurs are a good band. From london, no album yet or anything. We’re actually playing with them in a few hours. They’re just a nice blast from the nineties. Female vocals. Riffs. Nice people. Its good.
5. Pixies. Becuase it’s the pixies. We got to tour round Europe with them, and they were just awesome. Frank Black’s voice blew my mind, again. Listen to: Tame.
6. Middle Class Rut. Awesome two piece from the US. Sounds like Deftones and early Grohl with sick drums. I’ve been listening to them from just a scratched up CD of burnt songs from their myspace cos I just em so much. Wicked sound.
7. Future of the Left. Pretty rocking. Probably one of the only rocking band in the uk right now. 3 piece. Riffing. Shouting. Good.
8. Pulled Apart By Horses. Really good friends of ours, all grew up in the same cave. Rockin, loud, pretty messy but riff worthy for certain. Black sabbath plus Gallows with Nirvana shaped hammer.

9. Them Crooked Vultures. I suppose anyway. I’m kinda running out of options, but I suppose Led Zep, QOTSA, and Foo’s joining forces is pretty cool. Got to watch them play from about 10 meters from behind the kit at Leeds. It was killer. Although I’m a bit like, ok I get it- you’re rockstars, now move over and make some room.
