Artrocker.com top 20 records of 2007

Here's our favourite records of 2007. Compiled after many late night fist fights and shouting matches.

Check out these bands - we guarantee you'll love each and every one of them.

ONE

WHITE DENIM - Let’s talk about it (EP)

They’re arty, they rock - they have to be our band of the year, hand’s down. Buy this ep on Itunes, listen to it constantly, find yourself wishing that all other bands were this good.

Check out White Denim on Myspace

TWO

UNTITLED MUSICAL PROJECT - Untitled musical project (EP/LP)

Kick ass, witty and long over due debut from 2007 Artrocker Tourists…

Check out UMP on Myspace

THREE

COLD WAR KIDS - Robbers and cowards (LP)

This album proves that the White Stripes no longer have the monopoly on jaunty blues-rock. Step aside Jack, there are some new kids in town…

Check out Cold War Kids on Myspace

FOUR

SHY CHILD - Noise won’t stop (EP)

Shy Child stuck two fingers in the face of formulaic nu-rave with this edgy effort. It almost makes you want to pick up the Keytar…

Check out Shy Child on Myspace

FIVE

MODEST MOUSE - We were dead before the ship even sank (LP)

Beneath their penchant for massive album titles lies an uncanny ability to continually produce well-crafted songs…

Check out Modest Mouse on Myspace

SIX

BLITZEN TRAPPER - Wild mountain nation (LP)

Glorious ramshackle country wonderfulness. An album that’s indie but not schmindie and ‘alt’ without being ‘crap’…

Check out Blitzen Trapper on Myspace

SEVEN

SHIT DISCO - I know kung fu (EP)

The sound of a band with firecrackers in their pants, sticking the V’s up to trendiness…

Check out Shit Disco on Myspace

EIGHT

MIGHTY ROARS - Swine & Cockerel (LP)

They’ve gone awol, but the Roars kicked off 2007 in fine fashion with the release of this pop punk classic. More hooks than a fisherman’s hat, or that bloke out of Hell Raiser’s face or Steve O’s penis etc etc …

Listen to ‘Kiss It’ on artrocker.com Check out Mighty Roars on Myspace

NINE

SUPER FURRY ANIMALS - Hey Venus! (LP)

SFA are surf monsters from Planet Genius, and this album was up there with their best work. …

Read parts 1 and parts 2 of our Gruff Rhys interview Check out SFA on Myspace

TEN

VAMPIRE WEEKEND - A Punk (EP)

Blast of pumped up pop that reminds of early Police. Manages to be perfectly summery without being twee. …

Check out Vampire Weekend on Myspace

ELEVEN

THREATMANTICS - Don’t care (EP)

Three welsh bandits combine sweet country-life viola with jangly 50s garage guitar - irresistible stuff.

Check out Threatmantics on Myspace

TWELVE

SWANKERS - Fuck Off (EP)

The most hedonistic, distorted, evil pop song of all time: it makes you want to ride a motorcycle naked at top speed.

Check out Swankers on Myspace

THIRTEEN

BLOOD RED SHOES - It’s getting boring by the sea (EP)

Blood Red Shoes finally came real good with this very Kaito-esque cracker.

Check out Blood Red Shoes on Myspace

FOURTEEN

STALKERS - Yesterday is no tomorrow (LP)

The sound of the Devil Dogs gatecrashing a party at Johnny Thunder’s place. Punk rock party album of the year

Check out Stalkers on Myspace

FIFTEEN

LATE OF THE PIER - Bathroom Gurgle (EP)

Much as I’m intensely hating new-rave indie-disco, I love this track which succeeds in sounding like ‘like everything and nothing’. Equal parts guilty pleasure and simple magnificence. Just as long as they don’t become another darkness.

Check out Late of the Pier on Myspace

SIXTEEN

CUT OFF YOUR HANDS - Blue on Blue (EP)

The soundtrack to a Factory Records funded remake of the Italian Job, with Ian Curtis, Pete Shelley and Julian Cassablancas chasing each other round the centre of Manchester in minis.

Check out Cut off your hands on Myspace

SEVENTEEN

DATASHAT - The message (EP)

Down tempo yet pumping synthi-bliss track that recalls Boytronic’s ‘Bryllyant’ with a hilarious euro-vocoder tribute to Grandmaster Flash. Better than drugs.

Check out Datashat on Myspace

EIGHTEEN

THE LITTLANS - We look good together (EP)

The Littlans (not to be confused with US pretenders The Little Ones) is Andrew Aveling’s project after Add N To X and The White Sport ( http://www.myspace.com/thewhitesportinnit, whose members sadly absconded to tighten up Babyshambles (though The White Sport were the better band imo). This 30-odd minute track was written for Hedi Slimane’s Dior Homme S/S’07 catwalk show. It’s by far their best and sadly unreleased so far.

But you can download the track here!

Check out Littl’ans on Myspace

NINETEEN

Various - The kids at the club

Eighteen hit singles from a parallel universe – on this record, the indie legends from the underground finally had their day.

TWENTY

THE ROCKS - The game is up / Too much too soon (EP)

Double A side of the year! Not really a return to form for The Rocks, as they’ve never been off-form. Classic.

Of course there was also the bishops album - it got some horrible reviews but I think those writers probably look down on hooky music or something.
