Ruby Suns - Sea Lion

Released 3rd March 08 on Memphis Industries / Li'l Chief

Dave Taylor would like to get smashed on strawberry daquiris in the Bahamas while listening to the new album by Ruby Suns.

Sea Lion sounds like Animal Collective got stranded on an island in the Pacific and got wasted on fermented coconut milk for a couple of months. Back in the studio, after being rescued, they tried to recapture the sounds in their heads from that delirious time. It's psychedelic beach music, island sounds washing over the album like waves of mescalin.

It's the feeling of contentment and incoherent stimulation I imagine you get from getting slowly smashed on strawberry daquiris in the Bahamas, falling asleep while a spectactular sunset dazzles. Infact, if I ever get to do that, I'd like this album playing on some headphones while it's happening.

The nearest thing I can think of musically is Mystical Chords of Memory's debut album. There are similar themes of the sea and it conjures up the same feelings.

The New Order type sounds of Morning Sun and There are Birds invade the tranquility with some dour indie schmindieness. It's like the Rakes suddenely appear on the beach next to you and start complaining that's it too hot.

But you can always skip them, and overall, the musical world conjured by The Ruby Suns is very much a place where I'd like to take a holiday.
